PROPER PREPARATION OF MATERIALS TO BE RECYCLED
A. J. Blosenski, Inc., our collector of materials to be
recycled, has requested that all bins containing
materials to be recycled, be clearly marked and visible
from the street.
This is to ensure that those materials are easily
recognized and collected.
Township recycling stickers and information
concerning the preparation of materials are available
for free, at the Township Municipal Building
upon request.
Would you
like more information on the specific of the Township
recycling program? The following provides this
information:
COLLECTION TIMES AND DATES
Waste and recyclable materials will be collected on
Tuesdays. If a collection day falls on a holiday,
collection will be made the next day. Have
recyclables and waste at the curb by 6 AM of the
collection day. This will avoid “missed
collections” due to the trucks driving by your home at
times to which you are unaccustomed.
Leaves, Christmas trees and branches will also be
collected. Collection dates and details will be
provided when available.
WASTE/TRASH PREPARATION PROCEDURES
All trash (non-recyclables) must be placed inside an
official West Whiteland
trash bag. Any trash that has a bag tied to the
can or has the bag lying on top of the trash will not be
collected.
All bags must be secured at the top by tying, taping, or
the use of some other means to close the bag.

Reminder: The purchase of
West
Whiteland
Township
trash bags supports the cost of disposing of trash and
the recycling of materials within our Township. If you
are recycling, but do not buy the bags, your neighbors
are paying for your share of the cost of the system. If
you know of someone disposing his or her trash in
another matter please do not hesitate to contact us at
610-363-9525.
“West Whiteland
Township receives money from Pennsylvania based on the
amount of material we recycle. The more we
recycle, the more money we get back to keep the trash
bag prices down. Please help us continue to make
recycling pay.”
ACCEPTABLE RECYCLABLE MATERIALS AND PREPARATION
Recyclable materials include the following:
These items may be commingled in one bin. This simply
means that you may mix the recyclable materials together
in the same bin.
Brown, Green, Clear Glass - Remove lids and rings, if
possible, labels are okay. Rinse the container.
Place the glass recyclables in the bin with your other
recyclable materials, e.g., beverage bottles, food jars.
Aluminum & Bi-metal Steel Cans Only - Rinse the can and
flatten if possible. Place the cans in the bin
with your other recyclable materials, e.g., soup, fruit
and vegetable cans.
Plastics - A #1 (PET), #2 (HDPE), #3 (V), #4 (LDPE), #5
(PP), #6 (PS), or #7 (OTHER) on the bottom identifies
the appropriate type of plastic. The number
is in a triangle.
Remove lids, labels are okay, rinse the container and
flatten, if possible. Place the plastic in the bin
with the other recyclable materials, e.g., soda bottles,
milk and water jugs, laundry detergent bottles, plastic
tubs, yogurt containers.
In a separate container or brown bag place the following
items:
Newspaper - Place newspaper, including inserts in a
brown grocery bag, rigid container or bundle with string
into a stack no higher than 12 inches. If it is a rainy
day, please wait for a dry one.
Corrugated Cardboard - Cardboard must be flattened and
may be bundled with string. Cardboard must be
separate from commingled materials. If it is a
rainy day, please wait for a dry one.
Residential Mixed Paper - Simply place this material in
a brown paper grocery bag., e.g., junk mail, magazines,
envelopes, catalogues, phone books, cereal boxes
notepaper, etc. It is okay to mix it with
newspaper.
The Township will provide each new resident
that moved into a newly constructed home
with one 18 gallon recycling bin. Please utilize
this bin, but feel free to supplement them with your own
container. If you use your own, it must have rigid
walls, i.e., plastic, metal or wood. Bags and
boxes cannot be used. Rigid containers should be
marked for recyclables. ”Recyclable Materials”
stickers are available at the
Township
Building.
BULK ITEM COLLECTION AND PREPARATION
Bulk item collection is the last Tuesday of each month.
A bulk item is a single item which cannot fit into a
Township trash bag or weighs more than 40 lbs., but can
be handled by two (2) men.
Only four (4) bulk items will be picked up on each bulk
trash collection day.
All items that can fit into an official Township trash
bag must be placed inside a bag or those items will not
be collected. Be especially careful with smaller
items. Do not place these items curbside or put
them in a larger container such as a cardboard box.
These items must be placed in a Township trash bag.
The following items are not considered bulk items:
auto parts, batteries, tires, tree limbs and other yard
waste, construction materials/debris, items containing
chemical refrigerants such as air conditioners and
refrigerators, and items that contain hazardous
chemicals or gases such as propane cylinders. If
you have such items, please make private arrangements
with the contractor of your choice to have them removed.
RECYCLING BINS
You may purchase for $5.00 a recycling bin at the Township Building.
These new more durable 18 gallon bins are shorter
and wider then the previous 18 gallon recycling bins.

COMPOSTING
Composting is the most practical and convenient way to
handle your yard wastes. It can be easier and cheaper
than bagging these wastes or taking them to the
landfill. Compost also improves your soil and the plants
growing in it. If you have a garden, lawn, shrubs or
even planter boxes you have a use for a compost bin. By
using a compost bin you return organic matter to the
soil in a usable form. Organic matter in the soil
improves plant growth by helping to break heavy clay
soils into a better texture, by adding water and
nutrient-holding capacity to sandy soils and by adding
essential nutrients to any soil. Improving your soil is
the first step toward improving the health of your
plants.

WHAT DO I DO WITH LEFTOVER PAINT?
Latex paint
is not hazardous waste!
Latex paints are water-based and are a safer
substitute for oil-based paints.
Take the top off the paint can, place it outside,
away from pets and children and allow it to harden.
If the can very full, absorb the material by
mixing it with sawdust or clay-based kitty litter.
Stir with a stick until all the paint is
absorbed.
When the paint is solidified it may be placed in the
trash bag.
Oil based paint
is a hazardous waste! Save oil-based paint for a
Household Hazardous Waste Collection day.
See the
Household Hazardous Waste Collection schedule listed
above.
